Computer Science Engineering: CSE requires you to learn computing science & to some extent electronic concepts. Computer engineers are required to do microprocessors design, software development, circuit design etc. for which one needs to be strong in mathematical concepts & have aptitude for c++ programming
. It is strongly recommended not to take this field if you are average or poor in mathematics. Since the developed countries are outsourcing computing work to india, there is good placement scope & demand for skilled CS professionals. Do not simply follow others & assess your own skills as the field requires skills & real hardwork.
§ Electronics & Communication Engineering : ECE is a relatively new branch. It is combined of communication technology with electronics adding higher scope in this field. This is nowadays the most preferred branch by students. The course material is very similar to those of computers & electronics. Many recruiters do not differentiate this branch from its parent branches accounting for its greater scope. The course content is to sharpen the skill for design & development of complex circuit & hardware. The main employers are from private sectors
§ Information Technology : the branch is very much similar to CSE & slightly lesser mathematics skills can also work. It is related to effective use & application of already available hardware/software. It is also concerned with available system putting being able to gain commercial use. It is mainly involved in management of information using computers. The companies recruit you as data base administrator, webmaster, programmer & computer security analyst.
§ Mechanical Engineering : This branch can be claimed to be the mother of engineering. It is so primitive & yet so relevant. It is the application of physics & mathematical science for improvement of man’s life. The subjects of study are kinematics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat engines, material science, etc. drawing, cad/cam is also an important subject. The demand of mechanical engineers is in every sphere of life. The course topics being related to daily life makes it interesting & easier to implement. The packages & placement have been sustainable over the years.
§ Civil Engineering : it is also one of the oldest & core branches of engineering & has ample scope of employment in private. & govt. sectors. With infrastructure requirement of the country & increase in govt. spending in infra., it is going up in recent years. Although the initial salary packages are not at par with other branches but the work profile is also less strenuous. The main subjects of study relate to strength of materials, hydraulics, land surveying, design etc.
§ Industrial Engineering : this branch is a combination of engineering & management. It involves operations, manufacturing/production & management. Curriculum includes process & system engineering & financingn& engineering management. The degree makes you eligible for techno-managerial positions. The scope of placement is good if degree is pursued by a good college.
§ Textile Engineering : it involves process of conversion of raw materials to finished clothes. The textile engineer has to manage various processes from ginning to spinning to finish. Since course is available at few selected colleges, the competition is less & placement opportunities & salaries are fine.
§ Automobile Engineering : It teaches you the combination of mechanical, electrical & electronics skills but more or less it can be treated as subset of mechanical branch with emphasis on auto line. In recent days auto sector is booming in india with all international car manufacturers setting up their business & the growth rate is around 25%.
§ Electrical Engineering : It is a core branch that deals with production, transmission, & distribution of electrical power. The electrical engineers work on design, development & testing of power stations, telecom systems & common use applications. It is highly paid branches of engineering.
§ Agricultural Engineering : it is all about application of science & technology to agricultural production & processing. It is really vast field combining various sciences & engineering fields & deals in production & processing agriculture commodities. Since india is moving to the next era in agriculture field, the scope for production, processing & management is great but at the same time as it is a specialized sector stream so one needs to check his priorities.
§ Metallurgical Engineering : it deals with spheres or material science consisting metallic elements, mixtures & compounds. Although the branch of study is available in most of the top colleges , this is commonly not preferred by students. However this is a highly valued branch abroad & there are great career opportunities.
